The error as a starting point

Elogio dell’ignoranza e dell’errore” (In Praise of Ignorance and Error) is Gianrico Carofiglio’s latest work in which the author highlights the value of not knowing and making mistakes through concrete examples and anecdotes drawn from the world of art and science. In a world that celebrates success and perfection, error and ignorance are often seen as failures to be avoided at all costs. Above all, they are to be hidden from the world and, sometimes, from oneself. For this reason, blaming errors and stigmatizing ignorance are considered virtuous practices. Necessary. But perhaps things are not exactly like that.

What happens when you turn this perspective on its head? In his book, Carofiglio invites us to reflect on these concepts that, contrary to common vision, can be a source of personal development and humanity.
Through a deep analysis and many examples, Carofiglio shows us how error is an inseparable companion on our growth path. Since we were little, we have been taught that making mistakes is synonymous with failure: mistakes cost us bad grades at school and, later, can penalize our career path to the point of undermining our very reputation.

Ignorance, even more than mistakes, is often seen as a condition to be ashamed of. In fact, for ignorance, the contours are even clearer: ignorance relegates to marginality. When we move from the definition of the condition (ignorance) to the expression that indicates the subject in that condition (ignorant), the lexicon acquires the connotation of offense.

What if we instead considered both not as signs of failure, but as natural and inevitable stages in the learning process? Making mistakes is human, and it is through mistakes that we learn about our limits, develop new strategies, and increase awareness.
Likewise, ignorance should not be stigmatized: recognizing that we do not know everything allows us to remain curious and open to new knowledge, transforming our ignorance into a resource for personal growth. Through funny anecdotes and enlightening quotes, the author offers us a profound reflection on human nature, our relationship with the world around us, and the importance of learning from mistakes to evolve as human beings.
